Who we are
Brian Smothers, Psy.D.Dr. Smothers works with adults and adolescents in individual, couples and family therapy. Dr. Smothers also provides consultation to other mental health professionals, and psychological assessment for ADHD, learning disorders, and diagnostic/personality testing. He works with various mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and chronic anger. His areas of clinical interests include: men's issues, issues affecting the clergy and health professionals, aggression, and recovery from trauma and traumatic loss. He has worked in community mental health and university settings. Dr. Smothers specializes in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He was a 2013-2014 Fellow of the American Psychoanalytic Association and a 2014-2015 Teaching Fellow. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, and an Associate Professor at the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology.

Melissa Kraemer Smothers, Ph.D.Dr. Kraemer Smothers works with children, adolescents and adults in individual, couples and family therapy. She has experience working with individuals with a variety of concerns, including relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, men and women’s issues, adjustment, trauma, and grief. She has had the privilege of working extensively with survivors of trauma. Dr. Kraemer Smothers has worked in community mental health, university counseling centers, hospital settings and in a veterans hospital. Dr. Kraemer Smothers is credentialed by the National Register of Health Service Psychologist and an active member in psychological and counseling state and national associations. She has advanced training in emotion focused couples therapy. Dr. Kraemer Smothers is also an Associate Professor in the M.S. in Counseling program at Mount Mary University.

Individual PsychotherapyPsychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychologist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral and nonjudgmental. You and your psychologist will work together to identify and change the repetitive conflicts that may keeping you from feeling your best.

Psychological AssessmentPsychologists use tests and other assessment tools to measure and observe a client's behavior to arrive at a diagnosis and guide for treatment. Psychological testing is a great way to better understand yourself, your strengths, and your areas for growth. At Milwaukee Psychotherapy Collaborative, we offer psychological assessments to address a range of questions including ADHD, Learning Disorders, and Mental Health Diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In addition, psychological assessments are offered for individuals in clergy .
Clinical SupervisionThe psychologists at Milwaukee Therapy Collaborative are available for on-going supervision or brief consultation with area mental health providers. Supervision arrangements and case consultation can be discussed with either of our providers.

Couples TherapyCouple's come to therapy for numerous reasons, not only when a relationship is strained. In couple's therapy, your relationship is the focus and your therapist will collaborate with each partner to address areas for growth in your relationship. We welcome all couples regardless of who you are partnered with. We are an LGBTQ affirming practice.
Services for Clergy and Religious ProfessionalsThe Program for Psychology and Spiritual Life at Milwaukee Psychotherapy Collaborative serves the psychological needs of the clergy and religious. Our program offers systems of evaluating clients and suggesting directions for the psychological and social aspects of formation, treatment, and future growth of religious professionals and candidates for ordination or religious life.
